Funding Guidelines

Our Vision
The CARESTAR Foundation’s vision is that all Californians will benefit from a more coordinated emergency response system, sustained by a deeply connected network of partners, shared best practices, and innovative solutions for injury and trauma prevention.

Focus Areas
To achieve our vision, we provide grants that support:

  1. Partnership-based Injury Prevention
  2. Inter-agency Communication Systems
  3. Connection-focused Quality and Access Improvement

Our Approach to Funding
The CARESTAR Foundation is committed to partnering with, and providing support to our grantees to enable strong and meaningful work that transforms and enhances the field. This includes considering multi-year funding, and/or core operating support, in lieu of traditional project-based grants when it makes sense and can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the work.

General Guidelines
The following list describes our eligibility requirements for funding. Please make sure your organization meets these guidelines before applying.

  • Geography: Organizations and programs should be based in California. We will consider requests outside of California if there is an explicit focus on the California landscape.
  • Tax-Exempt Status: We support organizations that are tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporations, as well as state and local public agencies. We are open to considering funding for-profit, private organizations that directly support our mission, vision and values and are committed to work within one or more of our focus areas.
  • Organizational Leadership: Organizations must be able to fully execute the intent of the grant from a leadership perspective. We are particularly interested in supporting organizations that currently have, or are working toward, diversity that reflects the constituents the organization serves.
  • Financial Stability: Organizations must be financially stable, or working towards financial stability with appropriate internal financial systems.

We do NOT provide support:

  • To influence the outcome of any specific public election or to participate or intervene any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office.
  • For any purpose other than charitable or educational.
